Lyrics

Volume 1

Palestine Hotel

Let me tell you how I get to work

I get into my car

Drive it out to Arlington

Don’t even think about it anymore

Sit in traffic with the other jerks

Take exit forty-four

Park a half mile underground

And then I go to war

Got hired on a DARPA grant

A monthlong fellowship

That was 1999

Now I run the fucking ship

In my office there’s a picture of

The President and me

He’s smiling at the camera

But only with his teeth

I thought it would be different

In the Virginia underground

They said I’d make a difference

They said I should be proud

I wish I could remember

But I’m not allowed

You’ll never know what hit you

I’ll never make a sound

Spent a year or two behind the sticks

Just lighting up the map

Started double-boxing it

So they sent me to Iraq

They put me up in the Sultan Suite

At the Palestine Hotel

Got some fiber and an M15

And I started raining hell

Two Marines outside the door

And another on the roof

I never left the building once

But it sure beat the commute

By the time they shipped me home

I wasn’t sleeping anymore

Got some pills from the Langley boys

And I started seeing stars

I thought it would be different

In the Virginia underground

They said I’d make a difference

They said I should be proud

I wish I could remember

But I’m not allowed

You’ll never know what hit you

I’ll never make a sound

Last night I had a dream about you

Same as all the rest

Everything in black and white

Except your summer dress

Red dot on a field of static

Moving down below

You’re smiling for the camera

But I have to let you go

I thought it would be different

In the Virginia underground

They said I’d make a difference

They said I should be proud

I wish I could remember

But I’m not allowed

You’ll never know what hit you

I’ll never make a sound

Like a Star

 My dreams end

where yours begin

Ampersand

And paraffin

Switch it off

Come to sleep

Colophon

And feature creep

Something is moving outside

I hear it through the doors

Lusting for the glow

Scratching at the scar

What are you doing outside

Its safer in my arms

Warmer than the sun

Dying like a star

You’re a hole

An endless scroll

Dead Sea eyes

Rosetta soul

Search forever

Seek and find

I’ll be waiting

I don’t mind

Something is moving outside

I hear it through the doors

Lusting for the glow

Scratching at the scar

What are you doing outside

Its safer in my arms

Warmer than the sun

Dying like a star

Good Morning California

 Good morning California

Let’s turn the servers on

Let’s drive and check the chatter

Let’s all just sing along

We’re flying high

It’s passing us by

Reach out to me

If you still believe

Good morning San Francisco

You’re looking gray today

You’re always drifting lately

You’re feeling swept away

Good morning San Fernando

Our dreams are still alive

They rise up from the Valley

Above Mulholland Drive

We’re flying high

It’s passing us by

Reach out to me

If you still believe

Good morning Sacramento

You sound so far away

You should have seen it coming

You found out yesterday

Good morning California

I’m leaving you today

I just can’t watch it happen

I don’t know what to say

We’re flying high

It’s passing us by

Reach out to me

If you still believe

We’re flying high

It’s passing us by

Reach out to me

If you still believe

Do you still believe

Volume 2

Modified

I shook you in my dream

As hard as I could stand

When I stopped you fell away

Pockets full of sand

Waking up a world away

Cutting through the air

Seven thousand miles to kill

I’ll see you when I’m there

Just look into my eyes

You’re watching it decay

Twitching in the net again

Trying to get away

I’m living in between

The pleasure and the pain

Emblems glowing in the night

And melting in the rain

I’ve been modified

I’ve been modified

Well I guess it was worth a try

But I’ve been modified

I shook you in my dream

As hard as I could stand

When I stopped you fell away

Pockets full of sand

Waking up a world away

Cutting through the air

Seven thousand miles to kill

I’ll see you when I’m there

I’ve been modified

I’ve been modified

Well I guess it was worth a try

But I’ve been modified

French Concession

Meet me in the French Concession

Every day an English lesson

Once these streets were full as pages

Look it up

Trace the lines

Call the houses back to fighting

Frame the shot and I will light it

Faster than a revolution

We will turn

Back the time

Find me by the river’s edge

Back behind the brickwork

Talk down to me

Shut me down

Fill me with your notebook

Take me to your favorite place

Beside the London planes

Pull out all your maps and papers

Wave it all away

Pen and ink already fading

Sailing ships no longer trading

Scan it for the entryway

Overexposed

Exploded view

Blow it up

Just for you

Find me by the water’s edge

Back behind the brickwork

Talk down to me

Shut me down

Fill me with your notebook

Take me to your favorite place

Beside the London planes

Pull out all your maps and papers

Throw it all away

Big Data

Wardriving the CDC

I need a signal

I have a disease

You’re pulling away from me

Rewriting our history

Pour the past into the sea

In the night like a factory

Big data

Can’t see through it

Big data

So close to it

Big data

If I could

Just talk to it

Just talk to it

Got a date with a prodigy

Lab coat and a Ph.D

She’s asleep on the balcony

I’m checking her history

She’s mixed up with a legionnaire

Feels funny when I breathe the air

Big data

Can’t see through it

Big data

So close to it

Big data

If I could

Just talk to it

Just talk to it

Inside I’m a loaded gun

Been so long since I’ve seen the sun

I’m starting to come undone

Pull the trigger if you gave me one

Pull it down around us all

All alone like an avatar

Big data

Can’t see through it

Big data

So close to it

Big data

If I could

Just talk to it

Just talk to it
